Volt & Valley is reader-funded through affiliate links. When you buy a product after clicking a link on this site, we may earn a commission. You pay exactly the same price you would have paid otherwise.

That is the short version, and it is the whole arrangement. The rest of this page explains the mechanics, because a disclosure that only says 'we may earn commissions' is not really telling you anything.

The Amazon Associates Program

Volt & Valley is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. Amazon and the Amazon logo are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates.

At present, every product link on this site goes to Amazon. That is not a preference so much as a fact about where we are: we are a new publisher, and no other retailer or brand program relevant to this category has us as a partner. If that changes, links to other retailers will be added where they genuinely serve the buyer better — and this page will say so.

How our links work

Every product link on the site goes through an internal redirect at `/go/`, which forwards you to the retailer with our affiliate tag attached. There are two reasons for that, and neither is sinister:

• It means a product's destination can be changed in one place if a listing moves or a better retailer becomes available, without editing dozens of articles.
• It lets us see which recommendations people actually find useful, which is how we decide what to write next.

The redirect is not indexed by search engines and it does not track you personally. All it does is add the affiliate tag and send you on.

What commission does not buy

1. It does not buy a ranking. Every affiliate link on this site pays the same rate, so there is no model we earn more from. Several pages here recommend the cheaper or smaller unit precisely because it is the better buy.
2. It does not buy placement. No manufacturer has paid to appear on this site, and none has been given the option.
3. It does not buy a positive review. Every pick on this site carries a 'reasons to avoid' list and a line naming who should skip it. Some products are recommended only for narrow use cases and the pages say so.
4. It does not buy pre-publication review. No brand sees a page before it goes live.

Free products and sponsorship

We have not received any product free of charge from any manufacturer in this category, and we have not accepted sponsorship. If either ever happens, it will be disclosed prominently on the specific page involved, not just here.

Prices

We do not display prices anywhere on this site. We have no live price feed, and a price published once and left to age is actively misleading — a well-known outdoor title currently runs a 2026-dated roundup whose own footnote admits the prices were last verified in May 2025. Our buttons open the current retailer listing so the price you see is today's, from the retailer, not from us.

In-page disclosure

Every page on this site that carries a buy link also carries a visible disclosure near the top, and every individual buy button is marked `#ad`. We do not think a single footer link is adequate disclosure, and the FTC's guidance is that disclosures should be clear, conspicuous and close to the recommendation.
